A Round or Two Near Cabo San Lucas
If you’re golfers like we are, you’ll find the golf courses at the southern tip of the Baja in Mexico around Cabo San Lucas very well done, but expensive. Still, we couldn’t leave without playing a couple of rounds.
One of the courses we would recommend is the Puerto Los Cabos Golf Resort near the Secrets Hotel, about 10 minutes from San Jose del Cabo.
This is an amazing, efficiently run course that opened in 2007. It’s a 27-hole resort featuring three courses – two designed by Jack Nicklaus and one by Greg Norman that offer several 18-hole combinations.
The courses overlook the Sea of Cortez on one side, backed by the Sierra de la Laguna mountains, giving the Norman Course a 400-foot change in elevation.
The marshals really know the course and the tee sheet. They let us go out early instead of our scheduled slot behind a giant tournament, and when things got backed up, they moved people around so the backlog was short lived. The cost ranges from $150 US to $285, depending on the season and time of day. This includes the cart, food and drinks, and practise balls. While afternoons are less expensive, this time of day is considerably hotter, so decide if saving a bit is worth sacrificing comfort.
Generally, golf in Cabo is connected to the resorts. It’s difficult to simply walk off the street and play.
This was a super fun course with interesting terrain. We even spotted vultures circling high up by the rock faces. If you’re going to play more than one round, we recommend bringing your own clubs as the rental rate at the club is more expensive than the extra baggage fee charged by the airlines.
This course also has a great snackshack/bar serving cold beer, margaritas and food. The Shark’s Cove is on the front nine of the Greg Norman Mission Course, and the Bear’s Den is on the back nine of Nicklaus-designed Marina course.
On our next visit to Cabo we would like to check out Tiger Woods’ course, Cardonal at Diamante. It’s Tiger’s first golf course design, which opened in 2014.
