Two popular golf courses near Kimberley, B.C.

In the mountains of eastern British Columbia, Canada are two small communities – Kimberley and Cranbrook. Together, they give golfers seven 18-hole courses less than a half hour’s drive apart. Each has its own character – scenic mountains, forests and valley views, and challenging elevations.

Every August long weekend, Cobblestones and Beaches’ own Gavin Biedler and Sherra Bridgewater host the Whack n’ Wobble Golf Championship, all for the coveted Milo Cup. It’s a fun family and friends tradition that has been running for 20 years, and steadily growing in popularity.

The traditional venue is the Bootleg Gap Golf Course just south of Kimberley. This 18-hole championship course and a nine-hole recreation course, designed by renowned Canadian designer Les Furber in 2002, run along the St. Mary river. The par-72 course costs are running at $57 for 18-holes during the week, to $10 more on the weekends.

The Kimberley Golf Club is our go-to alternative to Bootleg Gap, should our preferred times not be available. It has been entertaining golfers since 1924. This one was also designed by Les Furber. The season runs from April 15 to October 15.

The course also runs along the St. Mary River. It’s a championship course that offers challenges for every level of experience. It’s a par 71, with green fees starting at a reasonable $45 for 18 holes.

We can’t imagine how painful this summer will be for golfers if we can’t get out to play. Perhaps even more so if you live on a course! Wow, that could destroy a lot of clubs.

Important changes to the Kimberley and Bootleg Golf Courses

In early 2020, a deal was struck between Purcell International Education and the Kimberley Golf Club. Purcell will buy land now occupied by holes 6, 7, 8 and 9 to build an international boarding school. Purcell will build four new world-class holes for the course prior to the start of school construction.

We suggest checking with the Kimberley course to see how work is progressing and whether there will be any disruption during construction. As well, the town of Kimberley put Bootleg Gap up for sale. There is no further information on that transaction.
