Spend Time in Welcoming Croatia

Brela, Croatia
Brela, Croatia

We have to say that Croatia was not a country that immediately appeared on our to-travel-to list. But after visiting for a few days, we take that back. Croatia is a country that should be put on the top of your travel list, and for good reason.

We flew into Split from Frankfurt on Croatia Airlines. We were met at the airport by a driver, who took us south of Split to Brela, a resort area on the Adriatic coast. It’s about half way between Split and Dubrovnik – a city that features fortified walls and medieval charm.

With six kilometres of pebble beaches and a small town atmosphere, we found Brela with its restaurants and walks a terrific place to unwind. The seafood is terrific and the service and people very friendly.

Heading back to Split to catch our return flight, we made sure to take a few hours to go through the ancient palace of Roman emperor Diocletian. The palace dates back to the fourth century AD. It’s estimated that the palace forms about half the old town of Split.

Today, the palace and its surrounding support buildings are surrounded by shops, and open-air markets.

Statues and other ancient artifacts are still very visible within the compound, including 3,500 year old Sphinxes that were given to the emperor.

The Temple of Jupiter is a must see with a statue of St. John the Baptist as the centrepiece. There is a baptismal font, a later addition to the temple, and two sarcophagi containing the remains of two of Split’s archbishops.

There is so much more to see in Croatia that this short article can’t touch, so if you’re looking for a terrific place to spend a week, put Croatia at the top of your list.
